I begin today an eight-day tour of the state of Maine. Julie and I have been here once before, several years ago when we accompanied Jeff and his family on a Christmas visit to his in-laws, Charles and Penny Harris, while Charles was stationed in Brunswick, Maine. We saw some of the natural beauty of the state and its coastline, but it was accompanied by cold and snow.
The State of Maine Visitors Bureau divides the state into eight geographical regions. I will be traveling in all but one of them. Highlights of the next few days are: Acadia National Park on Mt. Desert Island in the mid-coast region. A puffin-sighting boat trip in the downeast or bold coast region. A viewing of the radical tide shifts (up to 30 feet) in the Bay of Fundy at the northeast corner of the Maine shoreline. A visit to Roosevelt Campobello International Park, where FDR convalesced in the 1920s after he contracted polio. A camping stay in Baxter State Park to hike on Mt. Katahdin, the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. A trip to the northeastern-most corner of the USA at Madawaska. And I hope in the process to see a moose in the wild.
